Although we’re all still dying to know what happened in the Season 6 finale of “The Walking Dead,” zombie fans need to shift gears this week and prepare for the return of the AMC show’s companion series “Fear the Walking Dead.” Season 2 premieres on Sunday, but it’s not too late for those who haven’t been paying attention to the series’ teasers to study up on what to expect from the return.

“Fear the Walking Dead” focuses on a group of survivors who have fled Los Angeles in the wake of the initial zombie outbreak and serves up an all-star cast of characters, including Madison (Kim Dickens), Travis (Cliff Curtis), Nick (Frank Dillane), Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), Ofelia (Mercedes Mason), Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie), Daniel (Ruben Blades) and Strand (Colman Domingo). To help make sure everyone is as excited as they should be for the return of “Fear the Walking Dead,” we've got a rundown of the top six things you should know going into Season 2.

Where Will It Start?

The main thing to know about the show right now is that it will mostly take place aboard Strand’s yacht, Abigail. However, as Kim Dickens previously told The Independent, the premiere episode will open with the group still on the mainland trying to hold the fort in Strand’s mansion. With the military poised to execute its Cobalt strategy to terminate the city and its residents, they likely can’t stay in the confines of Los Angeles for too long.

A Season at Sea

As we all know from the Season 1 finale, “Fear the Walking Dead” Season 2 has opted for a nautical setting. As previously reported, executive producer Gale Anne Hurd said that the setting helps them address part of the zombie apocalypse that fans have previously said would be the safest place to hold out. However, once they travel to Strand’s yacht, they’ll quickly realize that their luxury setting is far too valuable for them to avoid nefarious human beings out for survival on their own terms.

“They go to a couple of ports here and there,” fellow executive producer Greg Nicotero told The Wall Street Journal. “They’re going to deal with other people who have had the same idea of getting on a boat and going out into the ocean to survive.”

While walkers are certainly the biggest thing threatening humanity, they might not be the biggest problem that our intrepid survivors will have to deal with. Can anyone say “pirates”?

Can Zombies Swim?

Before you even have to ask, the answer is "no." However, that doesn’t mean that the gang on “Fear the Walking Dead” will be able to avoid them. In a teaser trailer that was released on Thursday, fans got to see what it looks like when a walker hits deep water.

“Zombies can’t swim,” executive producer Dave Erickson told Entertainment Weekly, “They can wade. That’s something we experimented with when we shot the first episode. We’ve figured out the best way to shoot water zombies. They don’t drown. They keep floating back up.”

So, while they won’t be doing the breaststroke after their prey, zombies will still be a presence in Season 2.

New Characters

As previously reported, “Fear the Walking Dead” will add to its already impressive cast in Season 2 with the addition of “It Follows” star Daniel Zovatto and “Ride Along 2” actor Arturo Del Puerto. While the former’s role is currently shrouded in mystery, Deadline reports that Del Puerto will play a character named Carlos, a guarded man with a deep respect and understand of the spiritual aspects of the world. Following that announcement, TV Line revealed that a third actor, “Hemlock Grove” star Dougray Scott, will join the cast in an unspecified role as well. However, if you thought three new stars was enough for the AMC drama, you’d be wrong.

Flight 462

You may have noticed during commercial breaks for Season 6 of “The Walking Dead” that a self-contained storyline about an outbreak aboard a passenger airplane was being told in small weekly installments. That wasn’t just a bit of fun to promote “Fear the Walking Dead” Season 2. It was previously revealed that a member of the web series “Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462” will survive the plane encounter and make his or her way to Season 2. Sadly, the 16-part story ended without revealing who survives, but fans can expect the plotline to be addressed in the coming episodes of the TV series.

The Real Threat?

When asked by Entertainment Weekly what the biggest threat facing the survivors in Season 2 was, the often long-winded Colman Domingo gave his simplest reply yet: “People.”

“Fear the Walking Dead” returns Sunday, April 10 at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.
