After losing several members of the La Colonia at the end of the Season 2 finale of “Fear the Walking Dead,” Luciana (Danay Garcia) has to “re-recognize” who her family is in the upcoming Season 3 of the AMC series.

In a recent interview with Us Weekly, Garcia said that Nick (Frank Dillane) will finally be reunited with Madison (Kim Dickens) and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) at the beginning of the new season. And as Nick tries to figure out what his mom and his sister have become since they parted ways in Season 2, episode 7, Luciana is basically doing the same with the new surroundings she finds herself in.

“I get to see Nick as a son, as a brother. I get to see his environment,” Garcia said of what’s in store for Luciana in the upcoming season. “What is interesting is that it’s never the same. You have to re-recognize your family again, including myself.”

Garcia added that the challenge for Luciana and the rest of the show’s main protagonists in Season 3 is to make their makeshift family work. “It’s part of the dynamic this season of how the whole human side of being a family comes to life,” she said.

While it seems that the Clarks, Travis (Cliff Curtis), Ophelia (Mercedes Mason) and Strand (Colman Domingo) are going to welcome Luciana into their family wholeheartedly, things aren’t going to get easier for the former La Colonia scout. In fact, Garcia revealed to Dread Central that Luciana is emotionally broken at the beginning of the new season.

“She starts really bad,” Garcia said of Luciana. “She gets shot [in the Season 2 finale] and she’s physically in bad shape and emotionally even worse, because she’s lost everyone she knows [after the La Colonia residents got ambushed by the militia]. The only person she has left is Nick. To keep fighting, it gets harder and harder for her because there’s no reason. Not just that she lost everybody, it’s that she put everybody in that position, she told everybody to follow her because of Nick. She has a huge guilt in her soul about what happened.”

“Fear the Walking Dead” Season 3 premieres on Sunday, June 4 at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.
