Bayern Munich forward Mario Gomez came up big in the dying moments of the first leg of the Round-of-16 match of the Champions League with the game-winning goal over Inter at Guiseppe Meazza.

Gomes drilled the shot from close range after Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar couldn't hold on to Arjen Robben's shot, and now Bayern is in good position to advance to the quarter-finals by eliminating the team that defeated them in last year's Final.

Despite Gomez's late strike, the man of the match might have been Thomas Kraft, who made several saves, including Esteban Cambiasso's rebound shot after Kraft had knocked away Samuel Eto'o's shot, but the Argentine midfielder fired the ball high over the bar.

Inter mounted an attack in the opening minutes. A pass from Wesley Sneijder into the box was flicked by Andrea Ranocchia who just missed it wide of the right post.

In the 20th minute, Luiz Gustavo ripped a left-foot shot that was just off target.

Bayern's Mario Gomez had a great opportunity in the 28th minute, but shanked it over the crossbar from inside the penalty mark of a pass from Philipp Lahm.

Inter's Javier Zanetti was given a yellow card for a foul on Bastian Schweinsteiger, while Thiago Motta and Sneijder also picked up yellows.

Bayern's Frank Ribery was given a yellow for a foul on Sneijder, and in the 87th minute Gustavo also was booked for a yellow.
