Robbie Amell is sticking with sci-fi. “The Flash” alum is going to be in a Netflix movie about time travel, but unlike Barry Allen, he can’t seem to control when he goes back in time. The new trailer for Netflix’s “ARQ” (above) looks intense, and it seems perfect for fans of cult show.

Amell stars alongside “Jessica Jones” actress Rachael Taylor in the drama as a couple who starts reliving the same day over and over — the day Amell’s character gets shot. The film was written and directed by Tony Elliot, who has previously worked on “Orphan Black.”

It might sound like a “Groundhog Day” situation, but it doesn’t look like this problem is funny at all. The film is a thriller that takes place in a dystopian future where the oil supply has run out. Renton (Amell) is an engineer who used to work for Torus, the company responsible for wasting the Earth’s resources. He is forced to create an unlimited power source. Clearly, that doesn’t go according to plan. It doesn’t help that he and Hannah (Taylor) aren’t telling each other everything they know.

“‘ARQ’ is a story about fighting for what matters, no matter the odds or the obstacles,” Elliot said in a statement (via Entertainment Weekly). “It’s about believing that we can change, if we keep trying. That we will change, as long as we never give up. I believe that for myself as I do for humanity.”

The movie will debut at Toronto International Film Festival, but fans won’t have to wait long to see it. It will premiere Friday, Sept. 16, on Netflix.

Amell is jumping from one sci-fi movie to another. He is about to start shooting “Code 8,” a film that he and cousin Stephen Amell crowdfunded earlier this year. While both will produce, the “ARQ” actor will star as a man with superhuman powers who is being hunted by the government. Robbie will likely start shooting next year in Toronto.
