A gunman killed his wife at their home in Florida on Sunday and then walked into a nearby church and shot the pastor and associate pastor before parishioners overcame him, the Polk County sheriff said.

Police didn't release the name of the deceased because they said the next of kin had not been notified yet.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that the congregation of Greater Faith Christian Center was kneeling and had just begun to bow their heads and closed their eyes as their pastor led a prayer around 10 a.m. One elderly woman who was too frail to bend her knees and remained standing was the only one who saw Jeremiah Fogle, 57, run through the front doors up the center aisle to the altar, where he looked the pastor into the face, the sheriff's office said.

Once Fogle identified his target, he pulled out a .32-caliber Colt revolver, and shot Pastor William Boss then shot three rounds into Associate Pastor Carl Stewart, authorities told the Sentinel.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told ABC affiliate WFTS-TV in Orlando that Fogle was taken into custody after parishioners tackled him to the floor.

Both pastors were being treated for their wounds at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

No one else was wounded at the church.
