US fraudster Bernard Madoff's son has been found dead at his Manhattan apartment in New York, according to US media reports.

Police suspect that 46-year-old Mark Madoff, could have committed suicide. It was in March last year that Bernard Madoff admitted to crimes of $65 billion fraud through Ponzi scheme that eroded millions of dollars for investors.

He is currently serving a sentence of 150-year term in prison after admitting guilty to running the scheme.

On Saturday, family member of Mark had notified police over the incident. Police sources say that Mark and his brother Andrew were also being investigated in the fraud case.

Early this year, Mark's wife approached a court to permit her to change her surname after she claimed to have received threats to her family.
