Comic book aficionados around the world can rejoice: Free Comic Book Day is just around the corner.

Saturday, May 3, is Free Comic Book Day, an event held on the first Saturday of May across North America and around the world. To mark the occasion, participating comic book shops will give away selected free comic books to comic book shop visitors.

The first free Comic Book Day was organized by a panel of comic book industry retailers, publishers, suppliers and distributors in 2002. As the event has grown over the years, millions of comics have been provided at cost to retailers, who then give them away for free at Free Comic Book Day events around the world. Sponsors such as Marvel Entertainment, DC Entertainment, Dark Horse Comics, Archie Comics and others support the event, which attracts crowds to specialty comic book stores.

Depending on individual store policies, participants of Free Comic Book Day may be limited to one free comic book. However, some shops give out more than just one. The organizers of Free Comic Book Day recommend that those looking to participate in Free Comic Book Day should call their local participating stores for their individual policies. At some locations, Free Comic Book Day is immensely popular, so lining up early is recommended at those locations.

While comic books will take center stage for most of Free Comic Book Day, other gifts, such as figurines and action figures, will be also be given away for free at select retailers on Saturday. Some of the other free items to look out for include “Batman: Arkham Origins” action figures that feature Batman and the Joker, and figurines from “Warhammer 40,000” and more.
