Samsung Admits Letdown on Galaxy Tabs, Hints Focus on Galaxy Note
Samsung had a sobering admission this week: Apple is getting its way in the ever-expanding tablet market, with one company executive conceding at the ongoing Barcelona Mobile World Congress that the Galaxy Tab product lines were not selling as expected. REUTERS

Samsung has unveiled Galaxy Note 10.1 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, which started Sunday.

The Galaxy Note 10.1, which is the second entry in the company's pen- and touch-capable Galaxy Note line, packs some great features but can these features eat a bite from Apple iPad 2's popularity?

The iconic Apple Inc.'s iPad 2 is the benchmark for design and performance set by the California giant. While the world is expecting to see the launch of the much-anticipated iPad 3, here is a look at how Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 features fare when compared to Apple iPad 2:

Size: The latest Galaxy Note tab has a dimension of 256.7 x 175.3 x 8.9 mm, weighs 583 grams while Apple iPad 2 has 241.2 x 185.7 x 8.8 mm dimension and weighs 607 grams.

Display: Galaxy Note tab has a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 pixels Widescreen PLS TFT capacitive touchscreen display with 149 ppi pixel density whereas iPad 2 features 9.7-inch 1024 x 768 pixels LED-backlit IPS TFT capacitive touch-screen display.

Memory: The memory found in the Samsung tablet is 1GB RAM and 16/32/64 GB storage capacity with a microSD card slot given to expand up to 32GB while iPad 2 has 512 MB RAM with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB internal storage support. But Apple iPad 2 does not have an external storage space.

Operating system: While iPad 2 runs on iOS 5 operating system, Samsung packs Google's latest Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

Processor: Galaxy Note tab has Dual-core 1.4 GHz processor compared to iPad 2's 900 MHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU Apple A5 chipset processor. Information about the chipset, GPU of Galaxy Note are still unavailable.

WLAN/Bluetooth/USB: The Samsung tablet has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, dual-band, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth version 3.0 with A2DP and USB version 2.0. On the other hand, the Apple tablet has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 version with A2DP and EDR, and USB 2.0 version.

Camera: The Note tablet has a 3.15 mega pixel rear camera with 2048x1536 pixels with LED flash and autofocus features while iPad 2 has only a 0.7-megapixel camera with geo-tagging feature.

There is a secondary VGA camera in the iPad 2 while the Note tablet has a 2-megapixel camera for video calling. The Apple iPad 2 is capable of video playback at 720p, while Note 10.1 tab offers 1080p video playback capability.

Battery: Samsung Galaxy Note tab has a Standard Li-Ion 7000 mAh battery whereas the iPad 2 features Li-Po 6930 mAh battery which gives up to 10 hours of talk time.

Other Features: Apple iPad 2 has features like E-mail, Push E-mail, IM, HTML Safari browser, downloadable, incl. motion-based games, accelerometer, gyro, compass, A-GPS support, digital compass, MP4/MP3/WAV/AAC player, movie playback, iBooks PDF reader, Google Maps, TV-out, audio and video player.

The Transformer Prime has features like SNS integration, MP4/DivX/Xvid/FLV/MKV/H.264/H.263 player, MP3/WAV/eAAC+/Flac player, Organizer, Image/video editor, accelerometer, gyro, compass, Photoshop Touch app, Document editor/viewer, Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Picasa integration, Voice memo/dial and Predictive text input (Swype).
