A major political crisis ensued in the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire following President Laurent Koudou Gbagbo's refusal to leave office after the election commission declared him the loser of the November elections.

Troops loyal to UN-certified president, Alassane Ouattara started a joint military attack last week moving in from the north and the west. A fierce fight engulfed the entire country that claimed lives of over 800 people in the town of Duekoue.

As part of a peacekeeping mission to protect civilians in the region, the United Nations fired four missiles at a pro-Gbagbo military camp in Ivory Coast's main city of Abidjan on Monday.
