Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) will eventually have ties with the Joker, but he is not really the Joker in the Fox show “Gotham.” FOX

Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) from “Gotham” might look like the Joker, think like the Joker, act like the Joker, and laugh like the Joker. But as far as David Mazouz is concerned, he is not really the Joker.

Mazouz, who plays the young Bruce Wayne in the Fox show, told Comic Book that the series will introduce the Joker eventually, and he would even have a connection with Joker.

“Undoubtedly, nobody’s denying this, Jerome looks like the Joker without the pale face and green hair, so what does that mean? I’ll tell you what that means. It means that Jerome is not the Joker,” he said.

“It really is one of the biggest shocks,” Mazouz continued. “I think it’s safe to say that this kind of transition is not only the smartest thing, but the biggest kind of surprise that Gotham has thrown at its audience. ‘Gotham’ loves to kind of have a shocker moment. I mean, I’m sure we’d love to have crazy cliff hangers, but this is one that is not even on the same level as anything we've done before. I mean, the second I read that in the script, I was like, ‘Oh my God. Yes. That is perfect.’”

Mazouz said that the rest of the cast has been wondering if Jerome is really the Joker, so he cannot wait for the villain’s story to unfold this Season 4. But one thing’s for sure - Jerome “is not the man that will have green hair and a pale face,” Mazouz confirmed. “He’s not that man.”

Co-executive producer Bryan Wynbrandt also said the same thing before. “Obviously Jerome is our homage. He’s obviously not the Joker himself, although [he] clearly seems to be the impetus that eventually creates the Joker. The more that we see him, the more he carves out his own path I’d say. I wouldn’t say he becomes more the Joker, but the Jerome character continues to evolve,” he said.

As to what Jerome is up to, Monaghan earlier teased the Joker taking part in the “Batman: The Long Halloween” story arc from the 1996 comic by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.

He posted a photo taken from the comic book on his Twitter page. In it, the Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Solomon Grundy, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy and Mad Hatter are all sitting around in an office. The Joker then says, “Trick or Treat?”

“Gotham” Season 4 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
