A frustrated House Speaker John Boehner raised his voice at a press conference today about the current impasse on a continuing resolution that has caused a funding lapse, provoked a government shutdown, and left non-essential federal workers at home.
The incident has made the speaker the butt of jokes on social media, as Twitter users took the opportunity to mock him for putting up a tough exterior while complaining about the government shutdown his party is blamed for causing.
“This isn’t some damn game,” Boehner, R-Ohio, said following a GOP conference meeting. He criticized President Barack Obama and Democrats for not negotiating. “The American people don’t want their government shut down and neither do I. All we’re asking for is to sit down and have a discussion.”
Obama and colleagues have said the only negotiation they will have with Republicans at this point will be on a long-term budget deal, and that is after Republicans pass a “clean” continuing resolution to end the shutdown and reopen the government.
