Greek finance minister Vassilis Rapanos will resign after only a few days in office, the prime minister's office said on Monday.

The reason wasn't immediately known. Rapanos was rushed to the hospital Friday after suffering from symptoms including abdominal pain.

This comes after Greece's new Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, was released from the hospital following eye surgery. As a result, Samaras confirmed he will not attend the European Council's June 28-29 meeting in Brussels.

The meeting will be critical for Greece, coming just a week after its new coalition government was formed following months of political turmoil and two inconclusive national elections; however, hope has faded for any real progress to be made during the two-day summit.
