Feb 22 - Ethanol producer Green Plains Renewable Energy Inc (GPRE.O) posted a fourth-quarter profit, helped by higher volumes and better margins, sending its shares up to a new year-high.

Shares of the Omaha, Nebraska-based company rose as much as 19 percent to $16.79 in early morning trade Monday on Nasdaq. They later pared some gains to trade at $16.50.

For the quarter, the company posted a net income of $23.1 million, or 91 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $1.8 million, or 8 cents a share, a year ago.

Revenue rose more than 138 percent to $436.7 million.
