Talk about a blast from the past! During episode 12 of “Grey’s Anatomy,” Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) receives a visit from her very first patient — you know, the mouthy blond gymnast, Katie Bryce (Skyler Shaye).

“She’s basically Meredith and Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) surgical love child,” Amelia (Caterina Scoresone), Katie’s new doctor, puts it perfectly in the Season 12 installment. Katie was introduced during the pilot episode of the hit ABC series. And now Shonda Rhimes, creator of the medical drama, has brought Katie back. (And, yes, there’s a new, bigger issue going on with her head.)

“Oh my God. They still let you be a doctor here?” Katie asks when Meredith pops her face in the room. “She was kind of a train wreck,” Katie explains to Amelia. “She kept getting me lost.”

“It was my first day!” Mer says defensively. As much as Mer wants to be involved with Katie’s case (considering it has sentimental value to her), she has another patient who needs her care. Mer tells Amelia that once she’s done releasing her cancer-free patient from the hospital, she’ll return for Katie’s case. But Mer’s plan goes astray when her patient begins bleeding profusely from her chest.

Riggs (Martin Henderson) is paged and suggests that the patient be brought into surgery immediately. But Meredith, who isn't exactly Riggs’ biggest fan, has her own idea of how to handle the case, and it’s not by putting her patient under the knife. Despite their differences on how to move forward, they both agree that their patient should call her son before the surgery. In the episode 12 storyline it’s revealed that Mer’s patient left her child six years ago and wants to make amends — but not until she has her life together. But Riggs urges her to make the call and she abides.

“David said he was coming,” she says to Meredith as they race their blood-soaked patient into surgery.

“He’s on his way. Stay with me,” Mer orders.

Before they reach the surgical room, Meredith sees Katie, who was revealed to have a monster-sized aneurysm in her brain, being brought in for surgery. The “Grey’s Anatomy” protagonist then has a flashback to her very first surgery, giving viewers a glimpse at McDreamy in his glory days. “It’s a great day to save lives!” he shouts in the memory.

Luckily for Katie, Amelia is just as good as the “male Dr. Shepherd” — even though Amelia was fearful about the case. Thankful Owen (Kevin McKidd) gave Amelia a grade-A pep talk before the surgery, one that proved just why he’s so perfect for our favorite self-destructive character. At the end of the episode, fans even watch Owen transform into Prince Charming when he slips Amelia's shoe (the one she left at his house after a wild night between the sheets) on her foot.

But this episode doesn’t exactly have a fairytale ending. Meredith’s patient ends up dying on the surgical table moments before David is able to get to the hospital. Her son then receives closure by giving his birth mother a proper farewell — something Riggs is quite envious of.

During episode 12, Meredith musters up the courage to ask Riggs about his feud with Owen.

“He said you put [his sister] in a helicopter and it crashed,” she begins.

“Megan and I were working in the field unit,” he says, revealing that when a helicopter arrived for a patient, there was room for only one doctor. “Meg said it was her patient. I told her no. We fought and finally — it was her patient. I would have done the same thing if it was mine. So I couldn’t tell her no. And the helicopter never got there. No one knows what happened. Just disappeared … no trace.”

Check out other major moments from Season 12, episode 12:

Jo & Alex

Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Alex (Justin Chambers) finally come to a conclusion about what to do with the engagement ring stashed in Alex’s drawer.

“Keep it in the drawer,” Jo tells him, confirming that they still have a relationship. “I don’t want it but I don’t want it gone. So the drawer is good. So keep it in the drawer.”

April & Jackson

Unlike Camilla and Alex, April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson’s (Jesse Williams) romance has completely fizzled out. In fact, April looks happier than ever following the divorce, and Jackson is taken aback by her ear-to-ear grin. But it doesn’t take a detective to figure out what’s going on ... just a pediatric surgeon.

“How far along are you?” Alex says, revealing that April’s happy demeanor was just one pregnancy symptom that tipped him off.

“Nine weeks,” she confirms.

“Maybe you should tell [Jackson] before he figures it out, too.”

But April is planning on telling Jackson — or so she told Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). She’s just not in a rush, especially since bringing a child into the world won’t save their relationship.

Maggie, DeLuca & Webber

Maggie (Kelly McCreary) figures it out that Webber (James Pickens Jr.) knows she’s having a relationship with DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti). She confronts him about all the work he’s been giving the intern, from rectal exams to dry cleaning, claiming that she likes that Webber is “looking out” for her. But she asks her biological dad to give her hot, new beau a break — after he’s done filing Webber’s charts, that is!

"Grey's Anatomy" airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
