After the bombshell revelation that Alex was in prison, the doctors of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital are in a frenzy. Bailey broke the news to Jo during Season 13, episode 10 of “Grey’s Anatomy,” igniting a frantic search for more information about the pediatric surgeon’s fate.

At the opening of episode 11, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) enlists the help of her sister Maggie (Kelly McCreary) in finding any leads on which prison Alex (Justin Chambers) may be at and for how long. She digs through her email for a case number in the hopes that a quick online search will turn up something about his sentence. Maggie types the number in and the pair are shocked to see “30 years to life” on the screen. Meredith takes another glance at the page and discovers that Maggie’s typed the number in wrong and they are not looking at Alex’s information. Maggie tries again and learns that Alex’s case appears to have been put on an indefinite hold, but they cannot dig up any more.

Meredith isn’t the only one searching for a missing loved one during the episode, titled “Jukebox Hero.” She decides that if the Internet can’t tell her what she needs to know, she’ll try a face-to-face approach. She leaves her house to visit local facilities in search of Alex and runs into Owen (Kevin McKidd). He has come by in search of Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), who left home with just a note in the winter finale of “Grey’s Anatomy.” Meredith assures him that she’s not there and tells him she can’t handle searching for two people before heading out on her mission.

Meanwhile at the hospital, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) are working on getting a woman in labor inside a taxi into the hospital. The woman expresses to Arizona that she’s uncomfortable and fears she crushing the baby, so Arizona tells her to lay back and put her feet up.

Moments later the taxi collides with another car. It is then revealed that the driver of the second vehicle was the woman’s husband. Both are rushed inside for treatment and things aren’t looking good for the expectant mother. Arizona is riddled with guilt and commits to doing everything she can to save the woman and her baby.

While she works tirelessly to treat the mother and child duo, the rest of the Grey-Sloan Memorial staff are working to ice out Dr. Minnick (Marika Dominczyk). She repeatedly tries to jump in on surgeries, dictate how doctors teach their residents and more only to be shut down. Finally, Webber (James Pickens Jr.) agrees to allow her into the operating room with him, but it quickly becomes clear that it’s not a friendly gesture. He uses the opportunity to show her that things are running just fine in the hospital the way they are, and she doesn’t appreciate it.

The chaos ensues inside the hospital as Minnick tries to stand up to the staff and Arizona encounters issues with both her patients. Outside the facility, Meredith is having no luck with her search. She’s shut down at every facility she visits — they either have no record of Alex being there or refuse to give her answers. Owen’s search for Amelia is also at a standstill, though unbeknownst to him, she’s hiding right under his nose.

It’s revealed during Season 13, episode 11 that Amelia is staying with Edwards. Her gal pal is not all too comfortable with her presence in her apartment or the fact that she’s having to lie to Owen repeatedly. Amelia is understanding of her concerns, but she doesn’t want to work things out with her husband. In fact, she explains to Edwards that if Owen finds out where she is, he’ll attempt to patch things up and, in her mind, they’re beyond patching.

Arizona is able to stabilize the baby while Edwards works on the mother. The doctors are forced to reveal to the father/husband that they’re unsure whether his wife will awaken from surgery, though it appears to have been a success. His own worries mirror those of Owens, which leaves the doctor emotional. After talking with the patient's husband he and Edwards have a moment. He convinces her to reveal that Amelia is “safe,” though she won’t divulge any more information than that.

Meredith returns home after a long and fruitless day of searching. After sharing with Maggie the struggles she’s had, she retreats to her room to a surprise — Alex is in her bed and has been all day. The show ends with the pair embracing, which has us wondering whether a MerLex romance is coming in the next few episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy.”
