“Grey’s Anatomy” is back and the ABC medical drama is off to a dramatic start. Episode 10 kicked off just one day after the Season 13 winter finale, during which Alex was considering accepting a plea bargain and going to prison to spare Jo from having to testify.

As promised, the episode takes place inside a women’s prison, where Jo (Camilla Luddington), Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) have been called to tend to a pregnant inmate. Upon arrival, they learn that they are in over their heads. Not only are the out of their element, but their patient has a tendency toward violent outbursts.

Just moments into their assessment of her condition, Kristin attacks Dr. Eldridge (Klea Scott) — the prison’s resident physician. She is put into four point restraints, which her lawyer Amanda (Jasmin Savoy Brown) protests. Jo, Arizona and Bailey are visibly frightened, but agree to move forward with the procedure. Bailey is perhaps the most skittish of all the doctor’s present, but doesn’t let that keep her from standing up to Dr. Eldridge, who is less than happy that the state called the Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital doctors in.

Meanwhile, Amanda — dubbed the K10 (a rating given to especially violent and/or dangerous patients) whisperers in attempts to calm Kristin down so Jo and Arizona can begin the procedure. The patient jokes about her violent history, telling Jo she doesn’t bite, although she has in the past. Kristin quickly grows annoyed as she learns that she’s not expected to give birth that day, meaning she won’t be seeing her mother or her baby. Instead, Jo and Arizona intend to insert a probe and remove the acardiac twin’s connection to her unborn baby. Amanda convinces Kristin to move forward with the procedure by assuring her she was not intentionally kept in the dark.

Her calm is short lived. Kristin begins recounting the plot of a film in which a pregnant inmate was allowed to keep her baby in her jail cell with her. Bailey scoffs, which doesn’t go unnoticed. Kristin begins screaming, which is quickly stopped by Amanda. Clearly upset by the reality of her situation, Kristin tells the doctors she will always be her baby’s mom “even though I don’t get to see her all the time.” The heartbreaking moment is interrupted by Amanda’s revelation that she has to leave, meaning Jo, Arizona and Bailey have to keep Kristin calm through the procedure.

They get to work moving Kristin’s baby manually, which leaves the mother-to-be in pain. She repeatedly begs to have her cuffs removed to no avail. Uneasy, Bailey is wandering around the prison hospital to avoid returning to Kristin’s bedside. While traversing the dimly lit halls, she stumbles upon a patient in need of real treatment. Bailey decides to help her and quickly learns that the prison’s resources are sparse, which is affecting the treatment given to patients. After helping the woman in question, who reveals that her name is Lee (aka Needles), she confronts Dr. Eldridge about her lack of supplies. The two find common ground after Eldridge treats Bailey to a tour of her supply closet and explains that the city regularly cuts funding, leaving her with little to work with.

Back in Amanda’s hospital room Jo attempts to connect with Kristin by revealing her difficult past. She learns that Amanda actually had a very nice life — she came from an affluent family, went to a private school, and her mother was known for her award-winning casserole. She expresses a hope that her baby will live a good life with her mother, whom is planning to adopt the child, and will come visit her often. What she doesn’t know is that her mom plans to adopt the baby, change her name and leave Kristin in prison to serve her 20-to-life sentence.

Kristin’s mom reveals this to Arizona, who relays the message back to Jo and Bailey. They argue about what to do, deciding to keep it to themselves and focus on the task at hand. The procedure begins, but isn’t going as planned. Kristin goes into labor and the doctors are forced to deliver her baby with the abscess still in her womb. Kristin begs for her mom to be by her side, not knowing that she has asked not to be there. She breaks down, which pushes Jo and Bailey over the edge. Bailey — reluctant to even help inmates at the start of the episode — rushes to hold her hand and, in time, convinces the doctors to release her restraints. The baby is delivered, named and Kristin gets to spend time with her.

She is reluctant at first, but holds her briefly and shares a moment with her. She urges her daughter to be good for her grandma and not to make the same mistakes as her. Jo assures Kristin that her baby will “be OK” without her, but will miss her for the rest of her life. Arizona rushes to speak to her mother, who is eager to get the baby out of the prison. Kristin’s mom reveals that she will be changing the baby’s name from Ellie to Hannah, which doesn’t sit well with Arizona. The doctor confronts Kristin’s mother about her decision to abandon her own daughter and walks away.

As the doctors drive home, Jo breaks the silence with a hopeful thought about Kristin’s baby. Bailey tells Jo that she doesn’t think Kristin or the baby will be alright before admitting that Jo was right about prisoners being people too. She says that “stuff does happen to people,” adding that she recently spoke to Alex (Justin Chambers). Bailey reveals to Jo that he has decided to accept a plea deal and will be going to prison, which leaves Jo sick to her stomach.

Alex did not appear in episode 10 of “Grey’s Anatomy,” so it’s not clear whether Bailey was right or he changed his mind in the meantime. Tune in to “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC on Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST.
