Jo’s got a big secret on “Grey’s Anatomy” and Camilla Luddington — the actress who plays her — is none too convinced she’s coming clean anytime soon. When the ABC show came to a temporary close, Jo finally came clean to her former boyfriend about the fact that she was forced to change her name after fleeing the clutches of an abusive husband.

Jo never shared with Alex (Justin Chambers) or anyone else what her real name was, and it’s not clear, at this point, whether she intends to do so before Season 13 of “Grey’s Anatomy” wraps. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Luddington said that if Jo told anyone her name, it would be Alex. She added that she was “super curious” how Jo decided on her new name and what the significance was, if any. As far as what Jo’s name once was, Luddington assured EW she was as in the dark as the rest of the “Grey’s Anatomy” audience.

“I still don’t know her name!” she said. “I keep waiting for her to say it. If Alex asks, I think he’d be the one person she’d tell, so I wish he did.”

Although Alex is the one person Jo would likely confide in about her true identity, the pair’s relationship appears to have evolved far beyond its original romantic center. Following Alex’s attack on DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) in Season 12, he and Jo decided — without ever officially saying so — to go their separate ways. This left Alex grappling with the consequences of his actions, which were a result of his quick temper and a misunderstanding of the situation.

Scared he may be sent to jail, he often confided in his longtime friend Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). Their continually evolving closeness coupled with a recent comment made by “Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes during an interview with TV Line has many fans shipping the duo, dubbed MerLex.

Rhimes was asked why she hadn’t yet blurred the boundaries of any of the friendships on “Grey’s Anatomy.” Her explanation was simple — there is no real reason. Rhimes told TV Line she just hadn’t decided to go there with any of her characters.

“That’s like asking me why I haven’t had a certain kind of cheese. The answer is, ‘Because I haven’t had that kind of cheese,” she said.

“Grey’s Anatomy” fans will have to wait for the show’s return on Jan. 19, 2017 to find out. Be sure to tune in to ABC at 8 p.m. EST.
