A high school baseball coach in California was placed on administrative leave after a 17-minute, profanity-laced tirade directed at his players was released to the public.

Thomas Kim Brooks, known as Kim, who serves as athletic director and baseball coach at La Mirada High School in Los Angeles County, verbally assaulted his team after an April 26 loss, the Whittier Daily News reports. During his tirade, Brooks used foul language and told players to transfer to other schools.

“I’ve been here a long time,” Brooks said in the tirade. “I will tell you that was probably the most pathetic (expletive) baseball game I’ve ever seen a group play!”

Eventually, Brooks said that it was an “honor and a privilege” to play for the La Mirada baseball team. “If you don’t get it, (expletive) get out. Get the (expletive) out! That’s the way it’s been, and that’s the way it’s gotta be until I (expletive) die. If you don’t like it, it’s easy to transfer.”

The high school baseball coach told his players that he wanted them to be “men” while on the field. “If you can’t (expletive) dive for a ball in the infield, (expletive) you! Can’t make a routine play? (Expletive) you! Let somebody else try to make a (expletive) routine play,” he said. “You’re gonna (expletive) (complain) and moan at the (expletive) umpire? … (Expletive) you! Get off the (expletive) mound! I want a man out there. I want men!”

In a Tuesday afternoon statement, the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District said Brooks would be placed on paid administrative leave while officials investigated the situation.

“The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District has received a copy of a recording of high school teacher and Athletic Director Thomas Brooks,” the statement read, according to the Whittier Daily News. “The district appreciates the serious nature of the content of the recording, and as such is conducting a full investigation into the matter. Pending completion of the investigation, Mr. Brooks will remain on paid administrative leave in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation process.”

In an interview with the paper, Brooks admitted that he had gone too far. “My language was inappropriate,” he said. “I was trying to motivate my team after a very poor performance, and I apologize about the language.”

La Mirada principal Bill Seals has yet to reveal who will replace Brooks as coach when the school’s baseball team enters the playoffs on Thursday. “The kids are feeling confident,” he said. “We’re trying to take the distractions away. … I think it will be a seamless transition.”
