The year's most highly anticipated movie, The Hunger Games, held its world premier in Los Angeles Monday night, the NY Daily News reported.

Swarms of fans gathered outside the Nokia Theater, hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars who portrayed their favorite characters from the postapocalyptic science fiction flick. However, it was Jennifer Lawrence who stole the show, captivating the crowds in a stunning gold lame gown.

According to USA Today, Lawrence, who plays the lead role of Katniss Everdeen, was flipped when she saw fans camping outside the theater the previous day. Seeing it all just makes it so real, she said. This is just really humbling. It's amazing, said the 21-year old actress in a statement on the Web site.

Some of the other celebrities gracing the red carpet included Elizabeth Banks, Wes Bentley, Donald Sutherland and Josh Hutcherson who plays the lead character Peeta Mellark. Miley Cyrus also turned up at the event with her man Liam Hemsworth, who plays Effie Trinket in the movie.

The Hunger Games, which is hailed as the biggest thing since Twilight, is an adaptation of television writer and novelist Suzanne Collins' novel and will debut in theaters March 23.
