Right about now, most members of Congress would be packing their bags to head out on August recess. But their summer vacation has been delayed by the dysfunction on display Thursday.

Unable to agree on a compromise, House Republican leaders called off a vote on their $659 million emergency response to the influx of immigrants from Central America that is overwhelming border resources. Congress will discuss the matter further on Friday.

Speaker John Boehner said he would work with the caucus, and even discuss into the night if needed.

Meanwhile, a Republican filibuster effectively killed a Senate border measure proposed by Democrats on Thursday.

Politicians will head home for five weeks to campaign for the November congressional elections without giving President Obama any legislation on an issue that both sides have called a crisis.
