Stocks fell at the open on Friday after data showed weaker-than-expected May retail sales, adding to concerns about an economic recovery.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 83.97 points, or 0.83 percent, at 10,088.56. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> fell 9.08 points, or 0.84 percent, at 1,077.76. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> slid 21.77 points, or 0.98 percent, at 2,196.94.
