Instagram Update: Geostickers

In what seems like a never-ending “battle” of copycat between Facebook and Snapchat, Facebook-owned Instagram is slowly rolling out geostickers (geofilters) with its 10.11 update. The new Instagram update, which released Tuesday, is available for iOS and Android … but only for New York City and Jakarta.

“Since introducing stickers in December, we’ve loved seeing how you’ve used them to bring your stories to life — from hats to Valentine’s Day fun to customizable location stickers,” Instagram said in a statement.

Instagram geostickers are only available, as of right now, for Instagram stories (another feature first available on Snapchat.)

How To Use Geostickers On Instagram

  • Click on the camera icon in the top right corner of your homepage in the Instagram app or click on the “your story” circle below that icon.

  • From there the app opens the camera where you can take the intended photo.

  • Once you’ve taken the photo you’ll see the image without any extras. To add geostickers click on the smiley face icon next to the pen at the top of the image.

  • If you live in one of the areas where the Instagram geofilters/stickers are available, a screen will pop up with those available.

  • After selecting your Instagram geosticker you can move the sticker anywhere on your image by just dragging the image with your finger. You can also make the geosticker smaller or bigger by pinching or zooming out as you would with making an in image or text.

  • After adjusting the Instagram geosticker size/location you can either add another sticker or share on your Instagram story. If you want to save the image first, click on the downward arrow to save the picture to your camera roll, if you want to share click on the arrow at the bottom right of the screen.

  • Again, similarly to Snapchat, you can share the Instagram story with geostickers to either an individual/group of people, or on your story. After selecting who you want to send the photo to, just click send and your Instagram geofilter image complete.

There is no word on when Instagram's geofilters (geostickers) will release to other cities.
