Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts showed up at a White House event honoring the NHL Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins looking like he had been mugged on the way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Monday night.

Kerry, 68, had two black eyes, a broken nose and visible bruises on his face.

According to The Hill Nrwspaper, Kerry suffered the injuries during a “friendly” game of ice hockey during the Christmas vacation.

“He must feel like Mitt Romney after South Carolina,” Kerry spokeswoman Whitney Smith told the Boston Globe newspaper, in a direct jab to the other side of the political isle (Romney was once the governor of Massachusetts).

Kerry is quite the athlete, having played hockey, lacrosse, soccer and fencing while at Yale University in the 1960s.

The Boston Globe noted that he has long performed in something called the Congressional Hockey Challenge, a charity event that benefits the Fort DuPont Hockey Club in Washington DC.
