Johnny Depp and his signature glasses ruled the black carpet on Thursday, at the Los Angeles premiere of his new film, The Rum Diary.

The 48-year-old actor was joined by his co-stars Amber Heard and Aaron Eckhart at the premiere, held at the L.A. County Museum of Art (LACMA).

Depp has been waiting for The Rum Diary for quite some time.

Filmed two years ago in Puerto Rico, the movie ran into problems with casting, writing and production.

The Rum Diary is based on the novel of the same name by Depp's close friend and author, Hunter S. Thompson.

Depp, who also one of the film's producers, stars as a New York-based journalist who travels to Puerto Rico to find himself, write and as the title suggests, drink a lot of rum.

I spent very little time in San Juan, Puerto Rico prior to this film . . . there's a real celebration of life there. The people are incredibly warm and very welcoming, Depp recently told Entertainment Tonight.

Depp will take his promotional tour to Larry King next, when the actor appears on a CNN special on Sunday.

The Rum Diary, directed by Bruce Robinson, arrives in theaters on Oct. 28.
