2014 Kentucky Derby Candy Boy

As the hours before Saturday’s 140th Kentucky Derby wind down, the betting lines have shifted for some of the longshots, but California Chrome remains firmly ensconced as the favorite.

California Chrome is now at 2-1 odds after starting Saturday at 3-1, while Danza remains at 9-1, and Wicked Strong moves down from 8-1 to 7-1 odds.

Trainer Todd Pletcher’s Vinceremos, who's best finish was a runner-up placing at the Tampa Bay Derby in March, has suffered one of the biggest slides, starting the day at 38-1 and now at 50-1 odds.

Victories at the Southwest at Oaklawn Park and at the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill downs in November apparently haven’t provided bettors with more confidence in Tapiture, who went from 26-1 to 38-1 in a matter of hours Saturday

Commanding Curve’s odds have improved, despite his status as the lowest earning thoroughbred among the 19-deep field after six starts. West Point Thoroughbreds has seen their contender jump from 50-1 on Friday, to 27-1 earlier Saturday, and now a tick back up to 31-1.

Other challengers to California Chrome include Candy Boy, who’s remained steady at 16-1 throughout the day, and Intense Holiday who moved only slightly from 13-1 to 14-1.

The shifts can best be attributed to betting action at Churchill Downs with as many as 150,000 spectators in attendance and many updating their tickets until post time. Not to mention online betting.
