A fire engulfed Kenya's main airport on Wednesday, forcing the cancellation of international passenger flights while inbound flights were diverted to nearby airports. The fire, which broke out around 5 a.m., engulfed the arrivals hall and immigration processing center at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, East Africa's largest travel gateway, as black plumes of smoke rose above Nairobi.

The fire, which was contained several hours later, stranded hundreds of travelers but no serious injuries were reported. Many flights were diverted to Mombasa, about 300 miles east of Nairobi. International flights remain suspended, but domestic and cargo flights have resumed, the Associated Press reports.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport serves more than 5 million passengers a year, according to FlightStats.
