On Sunday night's episode of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” bride-to-be Kim learned the cause behind those itchy, red patches she's suffered from lately. "I'd heard of it before because my mom has always had it, but she didn't have red flaky dots all over her," Kardashian told Life and Style Weekly.

The 30-year-old was diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder psoriasis, a skin disease that roughly 7.5 million Americans have contracted. Its symptoms can range from a mild skin rash to a debilitating condition and commonly occurs on the scalp, knees, elbows and torso, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation.

Health officials say psoriasis occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells, and is not contagious.

"Psoriasis comes in three different levels of severity, and it depends on the level of severity that dictates treatment," Catie Coman, director of communications for the National Psoriasis Foundation, told ABC News. "The population can often be very cruel because they think the disease is contagious or has to do with being dirty," she added. "Celebrities with psoriasis are under intense pressure, and stress is a trigger for psoriasis."

Psoriasis is often misdiagnosed as a rash, ringworm or other skin irritation, such as eczema, according to the foundation. The group adds that although the disease cannot be cured, there are a variety of treatments ranging from on the skin to throughout the body that can clear psoriasis, often for long periods of time.

This all happens as the reality TV star prepares to become a bride, once her alleged wedding date speculated to occur on August 20 arrives. The wedding was rumored to take place next month between Kardashian and New Jersey Nets NBA basketball player Kris Humphries, after the two became engaged back in May.

The wedding is expected to be a lavish affair that will take place at an estate in L.A. Guests have been given their invites, but have been sworn to secrecy. The two have been taking dance lessons with Kim’s "Dancing With The Stars" partner Mark Ballas, to create a fabulous wedding dance.

Kim and her sister Kourtney were spotted out in New York last month with designer Vera Wang who is believed to be designing the wedding dress. It has been reported that Kim will have two dresses for her special day.

Dr. Lancer recommended that Kardashian try slowing down her lifestyle, as stress is a known trigger of psoriasis. Kardashian said that his request was "impossible."
