Beyonce and new-comer Lady Gaga will battle it out at this years MTV Video Music Awards - as both have been nominated in the top categories.

The pop stars landed a massive nine nominations each and will both compete for Video of The Year and Best Female Video prizes at New York's Radio City Music Hall on September 13 in a show hosted by prankster Russell Brand.

Lady Gaga said she is delighted to be battling it out with Beyonce.

I'm so excited! I can't believe it. I'm delighted to be in Beyonce's company, and I can't wait to go to the awards show and hopefully kick some a**, said the Just Dance singer.

Meanwhile, pop princess Britney Spears is continuing her musical comeback after getting seven nominations.

All three will compete for the honor of video of the year, with Beyonce earning a bid for Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It), Lady Gaga for Poker Face and Britney Spears for Womanizer.

Spears is currently on tour and her video for the song Circus was nominated for best choreography.

Lady GaGa and Beyonce are up against Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Pink and Taylor Swift in the Best Female Video category.

Gaga, who has been embroiled in a sexual identity scandal, will also go head-to-head with Eminem, Britney Spears and Kanye West for the Video Of The Year award.
