Jax (Franz Drameh) reminds Sara (Caity Lotz) why she’s one of the Legends.

In a sneak peek from Season 2, Episode 9 of “Legends of Tomorrow,” Jax tries to lift Sara’s miserable mood after the team failed to rescue Rip (Arthur Darvill) from the Legion of Doom.

“Sarah, you can’t just beat yourself up about this,” Jax tells Sara, who has been the team’s captain since Rip’s went missing.

Although the Legends managed to get a piece of the Spear of Destiny and some sort of medallion from the Legion of Doom, Sara still thinks that she has failed the whole team for not being able to save Rip during their recent encounter with the time-travelling baddies.

“It is my responsibility as captain to make sure that everyone gets back on the ship. Everyone, and I failed,” Sara says. “They have Rip. We lost him, Jax … again.”

“But they won’t have him for long,” Jax assures Sara, before giving her a much needed pep talk. “If I know one thing about you is that you don’t give up. When you really want something, you are unstoppable… We’re gonna find him and we’re gonna bring him home.”

At the end of Season 2, Episode 8, it was revealed that Rip is working as a director in 1967 Los Angeles. It’s unclear, however, whether this is the same Rip that fans have known before.

“[Rip] does come back, just not necessarily the Rip that we remember,” Maisie Richardson-Sellers, who plays Amaya/Vixen on the series, told Cinema Blend last month. “That’s sort of … a big part of the second half of the season.”

While some fans were disappointed when Rip was written out of the CW series right after its Season 2 premiere, his disappearance made a lot of viewers like Sara even more. But will Sara remain the captain of the team the moment Rip returns to the Waverider?

“I don’t know actually,” Lotz said during a Facebook Live Q&A with fans last week. “It’s funny because the writers kind of keep us in the dark so we don’t always know what’s going on until we get the script. I’m interested to see what happens. I think it’s fun being a captain but I also I think it’s hard because Sara has to be more responsible, and sometimes it’s fun when she just gets to go with the baddies.”

“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 2, Episode 9, titled “Raiders of Lost Arc,” airs on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017 at 9 p.m. EST on The CW. Watch the sneak peek below:
