A New Jersey man has been found guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend and trying to dissolve her body with the help of his brother.

Gualberto Lebron, 37, from Newark, was convicted for the 2018 death of 30-year-old Julie Vega, his ex-girlfriend and mother of his children. He got help from his brother, Gilberto Lebron, 38, to dump the victim's remains in garbage bags, which they filled with chemicals, Tap Into Network reported.

Vega had suffered domestic violence assaults at the hands of Gualberto. On May 5, 2018, days before her death, the victim was attacked by Gualberto in front of her children inside her apartment. Neighbors tried to intervene, but Gualberto managed to escape before the police could reach the scene.

Gualberto was charged with strangulation, aggravated assault and sexual assault in connection with the incident. However, he began stalking Vega afterward, even threatening to kill her if she did not drop the charges against him.

On May 9, only four days after the incident, Gualberto followed Vega, broke into her apartment, and killed her. He cleaned up the apartment after the murder and took out Vega's body on a rolled-up rug. He then enlisted the help of his brother to place her remains in trash bags, which they filled with chemicals before sealing them with duct tape.

Her remains were found in a "chemical slurry" at the back of a property in Irvington on June 1 of that year, almost a month after the killing.

Adam Wells, the assistant prosecutor who tried the case, described Gualberto's gruesome acts as "monstrous."

"But the entire community including her friends, neighbors, and family, along with tireless, dedicated members of law enforcement, came together to get justice for her. The jury was attentive and diligent throughout a long and disturbing trial, and returned a verdict that will provide some measure of justice and closure for Julia Vega and her children," Wells said, as per PIX 11.

The court found Gualberto guilty of multiple charges, including aggravated murder, aggravated sexual assault, desecrating human remains, conspiracy and endangering the welfare of children. He faces a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Meanwhile, his brother Gilberto was convicted on charges of desecrating human remains, hindering prosecution and conspiracy. He faces 10 years of imprisonment for desecrating human remains.
