A man shot himself outside his girlfriend’s house to “prove his love” in the Indian city of Bhopal on Tuesday night. He was rushed to a hospital and was declared brain dead by the doctors.

The incident occurred at around 9.30 p.m. local time (12 p.m. EDT) after the woman’s father told 30-year-old Atul Lokhande to “prove his love by killing himself." An argument ensued between the two following which he came out of the residence and shot himself in the head with a country-made revolver.

“He shot himself from close range. The bullet pierced his head and damaged his brain," a doctor said, Asian Age reported.

"Police have registered a case in this regard and further investigation is going on,” Bhopal Superintendent of Police (SP) South, Rahul Lodha, said, adding that the man wanted to marry the girl, local news channel NDTV reported.

Before going to the girl's house, Lokhande posted on his Facebook page: "Her father asked me to visit their home in the evening and kill myself to prove that I love her daughter. If I survived, he would let me marry her. I am at her residence, take me away from here (if I die). If I survive, I will come back on my own."

"Many people fall in love, but no one love you like I do... I can't forget you...Truth is that I don't want to forget you... Because you are mine. I will love you forever... Till I die and even after that... All lovers give their heart, but only I will give my life,” he added.

He also posted several photos of himself with the woman and said they were in a relationship for 13 years.

The woman said he wanted to marry her and had come to her house to convince her father. However, she decided to end their relationship after he failed to find a decent livelihood and neither she nor her family had accepted the proposal.

Meanwhile, the incident made Lokhande’s parents furious and they said want to file a case of abetment to suicide against the woman’s family. They also claim their son was upset after the woman left him and wanted to save the relationship.

In March, a Florida man shot himself to profess his love for his ex-girlfriend after he cheated on her. Ivan Filgueira, 26, called the woman and informed her that he was going to shoot himself in the thigh to prove his love for her, local daily ABC Local10 reported.

The woman said she heard a gunshot and Filgueira screaming over the phone following which she informed the police. On reaching the scene, police saw him with a gunshot wound sitting in a silver Lexus driven by an unknown person. He was immediately airlifted to Jackson South Hospital in critical condition.

As soon as Filgueira was discharged, he was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon after police discovered multiple firearms and ammunition inside his home.
