Edinson Cavani

Manchester United are being strongly linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani, with the player’s representatives in London to discuss a move to the Premier League in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Chelsea are also said to be keen on the Uruguay international, who only moved to the French capital for a massive transfer fee in excess of £55 million last summer. Yet, the Mail reports that Cavani is questioning his future after being required to play from a wide position in order that star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic play through the middle. It always appeared odd that PSG would spend such a huge sum on a player like Cavani knowing that, with Ibrahimovic in place, he would have to be deployed out of position. However, Cavani has played that role with his national team and continues to show his team ethic with his committed performances on the flanks. Having found the net 20 times already this season, he has also been able to maintain a strong goal-scoring record.

Still, the Mail believes that Cavani’s representatives are keen to discover the scale of the interest from England before holding discussions with PSG and the player. What’s more, Sir Alex Ferguson is said to have contacted PSG manager and former United defender Laurent Blanc last month to inquire about Cavani’s availability.

It is suggested that United could be on the lookout for a new striker this summer, with the club open to the prospect of selling Javier Hernandez. Meanwhile, there continues to be speculation about Robin van Persie’s happiness and long-term future at the club.

While that may be the case, it seems certain that it is central midfield that will continue to be the focus for David Moyes when it comes to strengthening his squad. That was also the case in January when Moyes ultimately came up short with his array of midfield targets. One man believed to be on United’s wanted list was Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos. The Germany international has just 18 months remaining on his contract, fuelling speculation that he could be set to leave the European champions. Kroos has sought to clarify the situation, stating that he remains happy at Bayern although failing to commit his long-term future to the club.

"Much has been written, especially in the last few days, about my sporting future," he wrote on his Facebook page. "The fact is I am very happy to play for Bayern and my position in the team is very good. [However] The fact is also that we couldn't agree a new contract.

"Since it runs until 2015 this is not a big problem, and we will see what the future brings. "My focus is on the sport side of things and we will do everything possible to complete the season as successfully as last season."

According to Portuguese publication O Jogo, Manchester United are still very much active in their hunt for a midfielder and sent scout Jim Lawlor to watch Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho in action last weekend. The 21-year-old is one of Europe’s hottest young properties and made his debut for Portugal in the first leg of Portugal’s World Cup playoff with Sweden last November.

A midfielder much better known to Premier League fans is also being linked with a move to Old Trafford. The Daily Star claims that United made an inquiry about Newcastle United’s Cheick Tiote in January and could well return with a firm offer at the end of the season. The 27-year-old has returned to form this season after a disappointing last campaign, although there will be doubts about whether, for all his tenacity, he has the ability on the ball to make it at Old Trafford.
