Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is considering signing a goalkeeper in January or next summer, with Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet prominent in his thoughts, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Ferguson has continued to rotate David de Gea and Anders Lindegaard between the posts, with neither keeper fully convincing. According to the report, Ferguson was set to run the rule over Mignolet in United’s encounter with Sunderland on Saturday, which his side won 3-1.

Mignolet, 24, could reportedly be available for £10 million. The Belgium international arrived in the North East in the summer of 2010 and has quietly established himself as on one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers in goal.

Ferguson is also thought to be keen on Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

After an impressive performance in victory over Manchester City, De Gea again put in a good showing against Sunderland and will hope to now earn an extended run in the first team. Ferguson will also surely be reluctant to spend big money on another goalkeeper having signed De Gea for £18.9 million just 18 months ago.

At the other end of the pitch, Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski continues to be linked with a move to Old Trafford. The Poland international’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2014 and both United and rivals Manchester City are set to be interested in a move at the end of the season.

However, Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke has denied that there has been any approach for the 24-year-old.

“There has been no contact from Manchester City, either about Robert Lewandowski or any other player,” he said, according to the Daily Mail.

“There has also been no contact [about him] with any other club.”

According to the Sun, Manchester United could take advantage of another player’s contract predicament by bidding for Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling. The winger also has just 18 months remaining on his current deal and the player and club are set to be some way apart in negotiations over his salary.

The delay has reportedly alerted both United and Arsenal, who could now go head-to-head for the 18-year-old, who is reportedly valued at £15 million. Sterling has emerged as a regular in the Liverpool first team this season and earned his first England cap in a friendly with Sweden last month.

Manchester United have also been linked with another winger, in Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha. It had previously been speculated that United could agree a deal for the 20-year-old in January and then allow him to remain at Palace for the rest of the season to aid their push for promotion to the Premier league.

But Palace co-chairman Steve Parish dismissed that idea last week and the Sunday People claims that United may also now not be keen on such an arrangement. The story suggests that there are concerns about a “mystery” back injury that is afflicting Antonio Valencia. With there also being continued speculation about the future of Nani, Ferguson may well be looking to recruit a winger when the transfer window opens next month.
