Maria Sharapova shocked millions of her fans on Tuesday after posting a picture on her Facebook page with, what appeared to be, short hair.

It turns out the picture was of her sporting a wig, Just Jared revealed. I posted the pics from the photo shoot and the story took off, Sharapova told the magazine. I love the short hair look but it doesn't work with my lifestyle.

Sharapova's shiny long blonde locks have a fan base almost as large as her tennis skills. The 24-year-old has been sporting the look for decades.

The short-haired picture of the tennis star attracted over 9,000 comments and 32,000 likes on her Facebook page. It's great, beautiful, said one fan. You look fabulous, said another. Sharapova posted another picture on wednesday, revealing her long hair.

Wow, when I posted those photos with the short hair I had no idea everyone would all go bananza.... (My dear friends, I never actually said I cut my hair!) so for the sake of my email inbox and it's stressful 24 hours, I would like to show you the below pictures...my hair is still long...and blonde...and well it's pretty much the same! We did a shoot a few days ago and I sported all types of hair styles...long and yes short (a wig!!!), she wrote in the Facebook post.

Samsung Sponsorship Deal

Meanwhile, Sharapova recently made headlines for signing a three-year sponsorship deal with Samsung. The world's highest-paid female athlete struck an agreement, which covered her native Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Bloomberg reported.

Maria really hasn't been marketed that much in Russia, her agent Max Eisenbud told Bloomberg. It's important to her because that's where her roots are. I also felt that was a really untapped market, with the 2014 Sochi Olympics coming up.

Sharapova, who made the finals in Wimbledon last year and the Australian Open in January, is ranked No.2 in the world.
