Mariah Carey and Brett Ratner seemed like a new couple, but fans may have jumped to conclusions about their relationship status. At least, we hope they weren’t a serious item since the director was recently spotted kissing someone else, TMZ reports.

Ratner, 46, was caught by paparazzi on Sunday night showing some affection for a woman who isn’t the “We Belong Together” singer. Carey, 45, had been seen on the same yacht in the Caribbean on Saturday and the two seemed quite close. However, Carey’s rep said the assumptions people are making based on the affectionate photos are totally wrong.

Her representative called the rumors of Carey and Ratner's relationship “ridiculous” in a statement to People magazine. “They have been best friends for a very long time,” the rep added.

The vocalist and director reportedly have been friends for 15 years. The two first teamed up professionally when Ratner directed the singer’s 1998 music video for “I Still Believe.” They have teamed up half a dozen times since then, according to E! Online.

Rumors that the relationship started to be more about pleasure than business were sparked after the two recently posted a few pictures of each other on social media and went on a Caribbean vacation together. Sources reportedly told Radar Online, “Their relationship has progressed in recent weeks and is now very serious.” Hopefully, those claims were a bit exaggerated or else Ratner is in some major trouble.

If Carey is actually dating Ratner, that would make him her first boyfriend since her split from husband Nick Cannon. Carey and Cannon, 34, filed for divorce in January following five years of marriage; they have 3-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe.
