It's that time of year again when all fashion enthusiasts come together for a week-long celebration of couture in New York.

Mercedes-Benz New York Fall 2011 Fashion Week, which runs from Feb. 10 through Feb. 17, kicks off Wednesday night at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park with The Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection. The venue changed from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center in September 2010.

The Heart Truth is a national heart disease awareness campaign for women sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The Heart Truth represented a revolutionary collaboration between the Federal government and the fashion industry in 2003 to create The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection fashion shows. Each year fashion leaders, including models, designers and celebrities, show their support for the issue by participating in the runway show. Traditionally, the entire room is clad in red with the models all donning red dresses, the campaign's centerpiece, in support of the cause.

Thursday marks the beginning of all other fashion shows with 12 runways in 12 hours. Highlights of Thursday include BCBGMAXAZRIA ,Project Runway's season four winner Christian Siriano, and season six winner Irina Shabayeva.

The week continues with shows presented by notable fashion designers such as Nicole Miller, Charlotte Ronson, Tony Burch, Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera, Betsy Johnson, Badgley Mischka, Narcisco Rodriguez, Michael Kors, Nanette Lepore, Anna Sui, Elie Tahari and with Ivana Helsinki wrapping up the week for the last show.

The semi-annual event was first held in 1943 in an attempt to direct attention away from French Fashion during World War II. New York is one of the four major fashion weeks held around the world. The other cities are fashion capitals Paris, Milan and London.
