Motorola is going to hold an event this week, when it is expected to announce the highly anticipated Moto X smartphone. Motorola

The Motorola Mobility LLC unit of Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is holding a special media event at its parent company’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., July 10-11 when it may announce the highly anticipated Moto X smartphone, the firm’s maiden product release as “a Google company.”

Motorola unveiled an advertisement last Wednesday including an image that showed two people jumping off a dock with their arms and legs in positions similar to those of an “X” and an “I” -- the Roman numerals for “11.” This happenstance has led to some theories suggesting the company might announce its Moto X smartphone on July 11.

Podcaster Leo Laporte also said on his “This Week in Google” show last week that he had received a Motorola invitation to an event that will be open to only 50 guests. According to Laporte, the company could brief attendees about the Moto X at the event. “[A representative] said we’d really like you to come down to the Google campus for an event -- small group of journalists, 50 people, two groups; July 10th and July 11th ... I’m thinking it’s the phone,” Laporte said.

However, C/Net reported Friday that next week’s Motorola event “is actually about something else,” rather than the Moto X announcement.

Meanwhile, a leaked document also surfaced Friday that suggested the Moto X will be launched exclusively by a unit of the Canadian Rogers Communications Inc. (TSE:RCI.B). The internal document claimed the smartphone will feature Rogers’ LTE Max network. “The version of the Moto X that’s going to be available at Rogers will be the standard version. As far as exclusivity goes, we aren’t sure if it is a timed exclusive or just an exclusive,” the Droid Guy reported, citing mobilesyrup as its source.

As for features, the Moto X is rumored to come with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, a 4.7-inch 720p display, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The device is expected to be powered by a 1.7-GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor.

“The first smartphone designed, engineered and assembled in the USA is coming. It’s also the first smartphone that you can design yourself,” Motorola said on its website.
