Every fourth Sunday of October is observed as National Mother-In-Law Day and this year it falls on Oct. 23. The day is to appreciate and celebrate the woman who gave birth to your better half.

National Mother-In-Law Day was first reported to have been observed on March 5, 1934 in Amarillo, Texas. The day was initiated by the editor of a local newspaper.

General conception about mothers-in-law is that they have a domineering attitude and cannot get along well with their children’s spouses. This may not be true in some cases and people are have really good relationships with their spouses’ mothers.

You can celebrate the day by calling your mother-in-law and appreciating her. You can also give presents to her or take her to her favorite restaurant to celebrate the day. Or you can please her with some of the amusing and light-hearted quotes given below:

“When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles with her own daughter – that’s something.” — Lou Gehrig, American baseball first baseman.

“I told my mother-in-law that my house was her house, and she said, ‘Get the hell off my property.’” — Joan Rivers, comedian

“Behind every successful man is a proud wife and a surprised mother-in-law.” — Hubert H. Humphrey, Former Vice President of the United States

“The mother-in-law is the center of a family.” — Les Dawson, comedian

“A mother-in-law is better than a single and childless political persona, though.” — Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Russian politician
