NBC Sports and Web broadcaster MediaZone will announce on Wednesday a joint Internet sports channel offering viewers of a broader array of sports events worldwide, from rugby to big-wave surfing.

The partnership aims to expand sports programming beyond what viewers can see on television networks and cable channels, the companies said. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The two recently collaborated on bringing live broadcasts from Wimbledon tennis to the Web, including video of more than 300 matches throughout the tournament.

NBC Sports and MediaZone will charge viewers to watch most of the footage, but they are seeking ways to build advertising around the events, according to MediaZone Chief Executive Michelle Wu.

NBC Sports is part of the NBC Universal media business of General Electric Co. MediaZone is part of African media company Naspers.
