Inspired by the femme fatales in Alfred Hitchcock films, designer James Mischka and Mark Badgley of design duo Badgley Mischka, channeled film noir for the Fall 2013 season at New York Fashion Week for their show on Tuesday.

"'Rear Window' is one of our favorites," Mischka said in a backstage interview. "We have a very strict, controlled silhouette. Think of Kim Novak in 'Vertigo.'"

Beginning in hues of black and white, the collection moves on to what Badgley called "dirty metallics," followed by accent colors like "blood red." The collection included crepe dresses, fox vests and stoles and peplum tops nestled in between the gowns and evening dresses the Badgley Mischka brand has been best known for since it began in 1988.

These aren't your run-of-the-mill gowns, said Mischka, who noted that sometimes gowns take the work of 20 people "round the clock for three weeks."

A celebrity favorite of Katy Perry, Drew Barrymore, and, most recently, Helen Mirren at the 2013 Golden Globes, there's no doubt that at least one of Badgley Mischka's dresses will make it's way onto the red carpet for the Academy Awards on Feb. 24. According to Badgley, the duo expects stylists to press them as early as the last look hits the runway.

"Our publicity team starts getting requests to please hold this for so-and-so. They all wait for fall runway for Oscars. So your dress either goes to the Oscars or to your showroom," Badgley said backstage.
