Like last week's controversial Time magazine breastfeeding cover, Newsweek's issue this week is sure to attract some attention.

In response to President Barack Obama's declared support of same-sex marriage last week, Newsweek's May 21 cover calls him the first gay president.

The picture includes a portrait of Obama with a rainbow halo above his head.

The cover story's author, Andrew Sullivan, writes that Obama's announcement was not a surprising aberration but three years in the making.

Barack Obama had to come out of a different closet, writes Sullivan, an openly gay political writer. He had to discover his black identity and then reconcile it with his white family, just as gays discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile it with their heterosexual family.
