A fiery car crash on Monday in Orange County, Calif., killed five teens from Irvine in what one official called the worst crash he’s ever seen. Whether alcohol or speed played a role in the accident is yet to be determined.

“It was one of the worst I’ve seen in my nearly 30 years,” Newport Beach Fire Department Capt. Glenn White told CBS News.

Authorities were still trying to identify the five teens killed in the O.C. crash as of Tuesday, but they believe that all five – three females and two males -- were teenagers from Irvine, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department told the Orange County Register. Their identities were expected to be released later Tuesday.

The fiery crash involved only one vehicle – an Infiniti – which split in half after it hit a tree and a center divider in Newport Beach around 5:20 p.m. on Monday. Newport Beach Police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe said the driver of the Infiniti lost control of the car before the crash.

Police didn't say how fast the car was going prior to the crash, but the road where the crash occurred has a 55 mph speed limit and the vehicle left skid marks. Authorities were still investigating the crash, including the possibilities that alcohol and speed contributed to the accident.

Four of the victims were killed immediately after being ejected from the car. The fifth teen, who was partially ejected from the Infiniti, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to CBS News.
