Sony's PlayStation 3 surpassed Microsoft's Xbox 360 last month as the videogame console sales increased by 19 percent.

According to NPD Group, a market research firm, Sony shipped 280,800 PS3s during February compared to 254,600 units of Xbox 360 shipped by Microsoft but Nintendo's Wii outpaced both consoles after shipping 432,000 units of low prices which favored casual gamers.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on the Xbox 360 was the top selling game of the month after the publisher shipped 296,200 units, including the second best seller, Devil May Cry 4, which is also for the Xbox, as Capcom, a publisher, shipped 295,200 units to USA.

Nintendo was the clear leader, in the portable console market after shipping 587,600 units of the DS while Sony shipped 243,100 units of PlayStation Portables.

Videogame accessories sales increased to $185.3 million compared to 136.1 million last year.

The videogame industry received 17.94 billion in sales last year, 43 percent higher compared to 2006.
