"Preacher" Start Date
“Preacher,” starring Dominic Cooper, will premiere on AMC right after an episode of “Fear the Walking Dead.” AMC

“Preacher” Season 1 finally has a premiere date. The series follows Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), a Texas preacher who develops mysterious powers. The drama hopes to attract fans of AMC’s other supernatural program, “Fear the Walking Dead,” so the network has scheduled the shows together.

On Sunday, May 22, the midseason finale of “Fear the Walking Dead” will air at 9 p.m. EDT, and “Preacher” will premiere immediately after at 10. The pairing isn’t too surprising. Not only is “Preacher” based on comic books too, but the trailer debuted during an episode of “The Walking Dead” in November.

Those who miss it will have another chance to watch the following weekend. On Sunday, May 29, the “Preacher” pilot will be shown again at 9 p.m. EDT, its normal time slot. Viewers will have to wait until June 5 for episode 2.

“Preacher” is produced by Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg and actor Seth Rogen. It’s one of several projects Rogen is producing but not appearing in. He instead has a cast of sci-fi actors. Cooper is from “Captain America: The First Avenger,” while Ruth Negga from “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” joins him as his ex, Tulip. Joseph Gilgun from “The Last Witch Hunter” and “Misfits” plays Cassidy, an Irish vampire.

The drama follows the titular character as he is possessed by an entity that gives him powers. In the comics, the character discovers God abandoned Heaven and has to search for him, but it isn’t clear if the TV show will follow this path. Goldberg warned that he and the other writers made some changes to the source material with comic book writer Garth Ennis’ blessing.

“We talked with Garth, and Garth very much encouraged us to make a lot of small changes and to make it a good show first and foremost,” Goldberg told Collider in January. “Our big thing is we want fans who love the comic to get everything they want but also make some new twists and turns.”

AMC’s official description doesn’t reveal just how much the show will deviate from the comics: “ ‘Preacher’ is a supernatural, twisted and darkly comedic drama that follows a West Texas preacher named Jesse Custer, who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that causes him to develop a highly unusual power. Jesse, his badass ex-girlfriend Tulip and an Irish vagabond named Cassidy come together and when they do, they are thrust into a crazy world populated by a cast of characters from Heaven, Hell and everywhere in between.” Fans will have to tune in to see what the writers kept from the Vertigo comic.

“Preacher” Season 1 debuts Sunday, May 22, at 10 p.m. EDT on AMC.
