Liverpool Football Club is said to be considering selling Mohamed Salah for ‘economic purposes’, according to the winger’s former Egypt teammate Mohamed Aboutrika.

He says the two-time Golden Boot winner is unhappy with the club after he was snubbed for the captaincy for the UEFA Champions League tie against Midtjylland.

Jurgen Klopp started Salah in what was an inconsequential tie for the Reds but chose to give the armband to Trent Alexander-Arnold instead, which the winger admitted was upsetting during a recent interview.

In the same interview, he also refused to rule out a future move to FC Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Aboutrika, who is close to Salah since their playing days for the national team, revealed recently that he had spoken to the Liverpool star about his situation in the club.

He explained that being snubbed for the captaincy is one of the few reasons the winger is unhappy with his current employers.

“I called Salah about his situation at Liverpool and he is upset, but that would never affect his performance on the field,” Aboutraki told beIN Sports, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“I know that Salah is not happy in Liverpool, he told me the reasons why he is not happy but they are secrets and I cannot talk about it in public,” he added. “One of the reasons that made Salah angry was that he was not the captain against Midtjylland.”

“If Salah was a player at Real Madrid or Barcelona, and playing at the same level as Liverpool, he would've won the Ballon d'Or, and it is normal for a Spanish newspaper to ask Salah about Real Madrid and Barcelona,” he explained further.

“In my opinion, Liverpool are considering selling Salah for economic purposes. I do not have any influence over Salah's decisions, he is my friend and brother, and he is smart enough to know what is best for him."

Meanwhile, Liverpool is reportedly continuing to monitor Kylian Mbappe’s contract talks with French club Paris Saint Germain, with the Reds hopeful of bringing the forward to Anfield in the future.

French publication Le Parisien is reporting that the reigning English Premier League champions are keeping a tab on Mbappe, especially with reports coming out of France suggesting PSG could be in financial trouble.

If they do decide to sell, Liverpool could well cash in by selling Salah and make a move for the French standout, who would be a top replacement for the prolific Egyptian.
