The PlayStation turned 20 on Wednesday, and over its two decades, Sony has released four home consoles, two portable consoles, a PlayStation TV and thousands of games. The hardware, technology and habits of gamers have all changed since the first PlayStation was released in 1994. Here's a look back at the launch titles of each system and the evolution of PS graphics.

PlayStation Launch Titles

  • "Battle Arena Toshinden"
  • "ESPN Extreme Games"
  • "Kileak: The DNA Imperative"
  • "NBA JAM Tournament Edition"
  • "Power Serve 3D Tennis"
  • "The Raiden Project"
  • "Rayman"
  • "Ridge Racer"
  • "Street Fighter: The Movie"

The original Sony PlayStation was released in Japan on Dec. 3, 1994, and Sept. 9, 1995, in North America. Of the initial games released in North America, "Battle Arena Toshinden," "Ridge Racer," "NBA JAM Tournament Edition," "Rayman" and "Street Fighter: The Movie" probably stand out the most.

Naturally, the graphics feel a bit dated now, but there's still plenty of charm. "Ridge Racer" conveys a sense of speed, but the slower pace and graphics of "Toshinden" are no match for current-gen fighters. The less said about the use of photorealistic actors in "Street Fighter: The Movie," the better. While the North America launch may have been a bit lackluster, great games were just two months away as "Twisted Metal" was released on Nov. 5, 1995, "Tekken" on Nov. 8 and "Wipeout" on Nov. 21.

PlayStation 2 Launch Titles

  • "Armored Core 2"
  • "Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore"

  • "ESPN Winter X-Games Snowboarding"
  • "Eternal Ring"
  • "Evergrace"
  • "Fantavision"
  • "Gungriffon Blaze"
  • "Kessen"
  • "Madden NFL 2001"
  • "Midnight Club"
  • "Moto GP"
  • "NHL 2001"
  • "Orphen"
  • "Q-Ball Billiards Master"
  • "Ready 2 Rumble Boxing Round 2"
  • "Ridge Racer V"
  • "Silent Scope"
  • "Smuggler's Run"
  • "SSX"
  • "Street Fighter EX3"
  • "Summoner"
  • "Swing Away Golf"
  • "Tekken Tag Tournament"
  • "TimeSplitters"
  • "Unreal Tournament"
  • "Wild Wild Racing"
  • "X-Squad"

The PlayStation 2 launched in Japan on March 4, 2000, and Oct. 26, 2000, in North America. And what a difference six years made. The PS2 had a lot more games and plenty of variety for hard-core and casual gamers. Compared to "Ridge Racer," the graphics for "Ridge Racer V" were drastically improved. The textures, car models, physics and depth of field were all improved. The same could be said for "Tekken Tag Tournament," as the gameplay was incredibly fluid and there were noticeable improvements in the characters and cutscenes.

In terms of a shooter, it's hard to go wrong with "Unreal Tournament," but it can't compete with current-gen games like "Destiny" or "Battlefield 4."

PlayStation 3 Launch Titles

  • "Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII"
  • "Call of Duty 3"
  • "Genji: Days of the Blade"
  • "Madden NFL 07"
  • "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance"
  • "Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire"
  • "NBA 2K7"
  • "NHL 2K7"
  • "Resistance: Fall of Man"
  • "Ridge Racer 7"
  • "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07"
  • "Tony Hawk's Project 8"

The PlayStation 3 was launched in North America on Nov. 17, 2006, six years after the release of the PlayStation 2. And while it had massively improved graphics capabilities and a powerful Cell processor, many criticized the console for its high price tags of $499 and $599 for the 20GB and 60GB models, respectively, which hindered initial sales. The PS3 had 12 games available at launch, notably the tried and true “Ridge Racer 7” as well as “Call of Duty 3,” one of the last “CoD” games set in the World War II era.

PlayStation 4 Launch Titles

  • "Angry Birds: Star Wars"
  • "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag"
  • "Battlefield 4"
  • "Blacklight: Retribution"
  • "Call of Duty: Ghosts"
  • "Contrast"
  • "DC Universe Online"
  • "Divekick"
  • "FIFA 14"

  • "PlayRoom"
  • "Resogun"
  • "Skylanders Swap Force"
  • "Sound Shape"
  • "Super Motherload"
  • "Trine 2: Complete Story"
  • "Warframe"

Sony learned its lesson from the launch of the PS3 and priced the PlayStation 4 aggressively at $399, with 26 titles available on launch. The PS4 launched in North America on Nov. 15, 2013, and in Japan on Feb. 22, 2014. And while it was a huge selection for a new console, only a handful of games demonstrated the power of the PS4, such as “Battlefield 4” and “Killzone: Shadow Fall.” Missing from the PS4 release list was another “Ridge Racer” installment. In its place, the PS4 was supposed to launch with a social racer called “DriveClub,” but the game was met with numerous delays.
