Real Madrid got back to winning ways to maintain its six-point lead atop La Liga with a comfortable 5-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Coming into the match on the back of two straight draws that, with Barcelona's win earlier in the day, meant that the gap between La Liga's top two clubs was cut to three points, the pressure was on Real Madrid to get the three points at the Santiagio Bernabeu.

But any tension was quickly cut when Gonzalo Higuain gave the home side a lead in only the sixth minute.

Receiving a neat ball inside on the edge of the area from Karim Benzema, the Argentinian side-footed the ball first time into the corner.

And Real Madrid's lead was doubled by who else but Cristiano Ronaldo shortly after the half-hour mark. Kaka cut the defense wide open to play Ronaldo in down the left and the Portuguese forward cut inside before slotting the ball into the far post past Claudio Bravo with his right foot.

The goal was incredibly Ronaldo's 100th in La Liga in just 92 appearances.

Real made it 3-0 before halftime with another high-quality goal, this time courtesy of Benzema. Xabi Alonso pinged a superb long pass forward to the Frenchman who took it inside his marker before knocking it over the head of Bravo and into the net.

It seems that was that for Real Madrid. But Sociedad was given renewed hope as it pulled a goal back just after falling three behind.

Xabi Prieto picked the ball up on the left corner of the area and curled what look like being a fairly comfortable shot for Casillas to save. But Sergio Ramos in trying to block the ball could only meet it with the top of his head and the ball arced up over Casillas.

But any thoughts Sociedad had of embarking on a famous comeback were quickly extinguished as Benzema grabbed his second of the night less than five minutes after the restart.

Sami Khedira played a wonderful first-time ball to find Benzema clean through on goal and the striker took his chance with aplomb to make it 4-1 for Real Madrid.

The scoring was wrapped up a few minutes later as Ronaldo made it 101 La Liga goals.

Young central-defender Raphael Varane played a nice ball forward to find Higuain in space down the right and the striker laid the ball across the six-yard box to find Ronaldo, who slotted home from close range.
