Real Madrid and Chelsea have come to terms on a season-long loan for midfielder Michael Essien.

As the transfer window closed late Friday, news broke that the midfielder would head to Madrid and reunite with his former Blues coach Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho originally signed the 29-year-old Ghana international to Chelsea from Lyon in 2005.

In his seven seasons at Stamford Bridge, Essien made 247 appearances and scored 25 goals.

Essien also contributed to two Premier League titles, and the 2011 Champions League title while at Chelsea.

Los Blancos stepped in at the last minute to nab Essien. He was rumoured to join Arsenal and the Turkish Club Fenerbache, who apparently offered £8 million fee.

Essien joins Real's other major signing of the summer transfer season, Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, who Los Blancos signed for £30 million Aug. 27 from Tottenham Spurs.
