Comedian Ricky Gervais scolded celebrities on Twitter Tuesday for being requested to use the previously trending topic, “#PrayForOklahoma,” following Monday's deadly tornado. The British native called the stars' use of the hashtag on their heavily followed social media accounts less than effective. He said celebrities should do more to help and that he had already donated money to relief.

Following a tweet from MTV News, in which the network asked Beyonce Knowles, Katy Perry and Rihanna to utilize the hastag in honor of the storm victims, Gervais responded sarcastically, saying he felt foolish for only making a donation. The tweet was much criticized and has since between deleted (See a screenshot of the message here). The avowed atheist later released a short rant about his belief that “praying” for a situation does nothing to resolve it.

The 51-year-old Gervais went on to plead to his 4.6 million followers to participate in the relief efforts, asking fans to donate to the Red Cross and creating a new hastag, “#ActuallyDoSomethingForOklahoma.” Gervais tweeted again Wednesday, claiming the organization had reached out to thank him for his attempts to promote the cause.

Perry actually never shared the“#PrayForOklahoma” hashtag on her account, only asking her Twitter fans to donate to the Red Cross Tuesday.

The last time Gervais’s Twitter feed gained national attention was after he shared his appreciation for his UK series, “The Office” reportedly saving the life of a man on the verge of committing suicide. Jody Parrish claimed in April that he was about to end his own life when he accidentally stepped on his TV remote, turning on the comedy series.

“I’d not seen it in years, but I don’t think I ever laughed so much,” said Parrish, 32. “I realized I had something to live for.” Gervais responded that he was pleased the show could do so much good.
