Kristen Stewart infamously had an affair in 2012 with film director Rupert Sanders, with whom she worked on “Snow White & the Huntsman,” and according to a new report, the formerly married filmmaker is still in love with the A-list actress and hoping for a future with her.

According to a report from Radar Online, Sanders, 42, is no longer seeing the 23-year-old former “Twilight” star but is more than willing to rekindle their controversial romance. “They are still in contact, and incredibly, Rupert is still hoping for a future together,” a source told the gossip site, adding claims that Stewart is not willing to exclusively date Sanders due to her fears of ruining her public image, considering the backlash she endured from the highly publicized affair. At the time, Sanders was married to actress Liberty Ross, with two children, and Stewart was still dating her “Twilight” co-star Robert Pattinson. “Kristen has come to her senses,” said the insider.

Stewart, rumored to have recently celebrated Valentine’s Day with Pattinson, is reportedly unwilling to reconnect with Sanders, but the filmmaker is allegedly obsessed with wooing her. “He fell in love with her a long time before he laid a finger on her,” said the source, adding, “He’s finding it difficult to shake… Rupert, against all better judgment, still holds out hope that he and Kristen can get things going again. But he’s completely deluded; she would never put her career on the line like that again.”

Sanders previously apologized for his affair with Stewart, saying, “I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family. My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart. I am praying that we can get through this together." The filmmaker was served with divorce papers from Ross, the mother of his two children, in January of 2013 after 12 years of marriage.

Following the affair, Stewart issued her own personal statement, calling her decision to cheat "embarrassing" and publicly professing her love for Pattinson, calling him “the most important thing” in her life, only to recently reveal that she is not ashamed of any of her previous actions. “I stand by every mistake I’ve ever made, so judge away,” Stewart said in the March issue of Marie Claire, released earlier this month.

While Stewart and Pattinson supposedly called their relationship of three years quits last May, the couple has been spotted together several times since, most recently last October. According to recent rumors, the co-stars even recognized one another on Valentine’s Day last week, Pattinson gifting his former lover flowers and Stewart sending the British native candid photos of herself and their three shared animals. "They both are still crazy about each other," one of Stewart's unidentified pals told Hollywoodlife, adding, "Kristen has been telling all of their mutual friends that she’s over Rob and ready to move on, but it’s not true. She knows it will get back to Rob, and it is all part of her plan to get him back.”
